Exclusive Mode

Bypass the system. Deliver audio directly to your hardware.

What Is Exclusive Mode

On macOS, most audio is routed through the system audio layer.

This means:

  • Audio is mixed with system sounds
  • Sample rate may be changed
  • Additional processing may occur

Exclusive Mode allows Mossca to bypass this layer and send audio directly to your output device.

Why It Matters

System audio is designed for flexibility, not precision.

It prioritizes:

  • Multiple apps playing at once
  • Seamless switching between devices
  • System-wide audio control

But this comes with trade-offs.

Exclusive Mode removes these variables and provides a controlled playback path.

Shared vs Exclusive

Shared Mode (System Audio)

  • Audio routed through Core Audio
  • Mixed with other applications
  • Possible system-level resampling

Best for:

  • Built-in speakers
  • Casual listening
  • General usage

Exclusive Mode (Direct Output)

  • Bypasses system mixer
  • Direct communication with hardware
  • No system interference

Best for:

  • External DAC setups
  • Dedicated listening sessions

What Changes in Exclusive Mode

When enabled, Mossca takes full control of the audio device.

  • No system mixing
  • No background audio interruptions
  • No unexpected sample rate changes

The playback path becomes deterministic and consistent.

Designed for External DACs

Exclusive Mode is most meaningful when using an external DAC.

In this setup:

  • The Mac acts as a digital transport
  • The DAC performs the final conversion
  • Mossca ensures a clean, direct signal path

This allows your hardware to operate as intended.

Bit-Perfect Output

In Exclusive Mode, Mossca can preserve output integrity:

  • No DSP
  • No unintended resampling
  • No system-level modifications

When conditions allow, audio is delivered exactly as decoded.

When You Should Use It

Use Exclusive Mode when:

  • You are using an external DAC
  • You want a consistent playback path
  • You want to avoid system-level interference

When You Don't Need It

You may not need Exclusive Mode when:

  • Using built-in speakers
  • Listening casually
  • Running multiple audio apps simultaneously

Important Notes

Exclusive Mode locks the audio device.

While active:

  • Other apps cannot output audio
  • System sounds may be muted

This is expected behavior.

The Goal

Exclusive Mode is not about adding features.

It is about removing uncertainty.

Delivering audio directly, cleanly, and predictably.
